Twelve-Hour Standoff In Herndon Ends With Hostage Safe, Barricaded Man In Custody (Developing)

A potentially volatile situation was ended peacefully after SWAT and other tactical teams had to be called in to resolve an hours-long hostage situation at a Virginia home overnight.

There was a heavy police presence around the 700 block of Hemlock Court in Herndon late on Tuesday, Dec. 27, as police shut down area roadways as they investigated a barricade that involved at least one suspect and a hostage.

At nearly midnight on Tuesday night, officials from the Herndon Police Department reported that the hostage had been safely removed from the home, though the suspect remained barricaded inside.

The incident stretched out through the morning, with Virginia State Police tactical units, a SWAT team, and negotiators from Fairfax County called in to help persuade the barricaded suspect to leave the home.

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, officials said that the suspect surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody by members of the Herndon Police Department without further incident.

He was evaluated and treated by paramedics. Police say that his name and photo, as well as pending charges, will be released “upon the execution of arrest warrants.”

Herndon Parkway was reopened to traffic shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
